I'll be moving into our new home shortly and will be shopping around for furniture. We like more traditional styles and are open to good used furniture as well.

Any recommendations in terms of where to shop for best prices (mid-range)and decent quality?

We've been to Ashley (not good quality), Star (mediocre), Bassett (should be better quality but it's not), Havarty's (good quality, not great though), and Lacks (like Star), JC Penny's home store, and Macy's home store. Still haven't found anything that floats our boat enough to buy. Our new king size mattress is sitting on the floor in the middle of an otherwise empty 19x18 bedroom. The good news is it functions just fine without a bedframe. If you find a good furniture place that isn't astronomically priced or cheap particle board let us know!

Default Quality Furniture

You might try Thomasville Furniture in San Marcos:

While you're in the area, try the North Carolina furniture store across from The Outlet Stores (exit 200 on I35).

I have a Bassett set that is 8 years old. I've checked out some of their newer lines and I have noticed that the quality wasn't the same. For the 2 of the five spare bedrooms, I don't need anything really expensive, so I may look at cheaper (but not bottom line) furniture.

I like their selections. Do you know anything about the quality of their furniture? Some of the descriptions refer to "veneer", but I was wondering if this would be okay for some secondary guest bedrooms.

North Carolina Furniture seems like a great spot. I hope their pricing is competitive. I'll definitely check them out.

Better late than never... Mama always said... :-)
Came across this thread. My wife and I moved in from California and needed to purchase some furniture for a larger home. We shopped around to all the places mentioned above but by complete accident we came across Furniture Row. It's located across from the Ingram Park Mall (I believe that's the name of the mall)... The funny thing is we drove by it before and it never looked promising until I made a wrong turn in traffic and had nothing else better to do but check it out. The place we looked was actually called "Oak Express" very beautiful furniture covering everything from bedroom, kitchen, living room and even mattresses. They're styles range from classic to country to contemporary. We love the dark oak. Mahogany preferably and found some very beautiful stuff. Needless to say 5k later we re-furnished one bedroom a living room, and even our kitchen. I believe for those interested they're offering no payments no interest until 2009. Good luck searching!!

We've bought furniture at Rooms To Go for the breakfast room and a couple of guest bedrooms. Also bought a bombe chest for a hallway. We've not had any problems and the furniture seems well made.
