On Lackland, military members in uniform who forget their military ID have to have a person from their office call and vouch for them. I'm pretty sure a person without military ID can't just walk up, flash his TXDL and stroll on in without a sponsor (a person who has access to the base and is stating they will be responsible for the visitor). Unless things have changed...

I think they are a little easier than the Air Force bases, there are a couple of Museums that are open to the public. Ft. Sam was completely open until the overreaction to 9/11.....

Fort Sam Houston Museum - Step Into History

Both sites essentially say go to the right gate and get a pass to visit...

For completeness Frommer's entry on Fort Sam, indicating it is a valid tourist attraction...

Fort. Sam is different, it used to be an open base, and there is really no reason it shouldn't be unless the US is under a red threat alert, but anyway, pretty sure you can just show your ID at a VISITOR gate at Ft. Sam and they will let you in. It's not like an airforce base, where there is aviation and other things going on.

Army posts (the Army has posts, the Air Force has bases) are closed installations and have been since 9/11. All access points to the post have 100% ID check. If your vehicle does not have a DOD decal and the people inside do not have a military ID, you must go to the visitor center with your drivers license, insurance, and you'll get a day pass to come on to post. Once you get your paper visitors' pass, you show it and all adults in the car must show their IDs at the access point.

Do you know of any hydro excavation work going on in Fort Sam Houston? The trucks are pretty noisy and there should be 2 if not 3 hydro excavation units there.

I am trying to find out what is the name of the contractor involved. I know the company doing the Hydro Excavation is H2X. I would like to know who contracted them.

If plans are to add stores to the Fort, how about doing a separate entrance to the shops for visitors/ non military related folks and have it so they cannot access the rest of the base?
