im a bit confused, is fort sam gated off? and if so will it stay gated of or will they incorporate it into the city?

It is gated.. I dont see it ever being ungated to become part of the city.. unless they move the Army out..

soo.... if it's gated and they build the shoping center on the base..... then we can't go, right? Unless we work @ Ft. Sam??

Actually I believe you can, you just must use a visitor gate, and show an ID.

As the article in today's E-N points out, very few people actually go on base as visitors, compared to before 9/11. If they're like me, I guess they assume they're not allowed to enter. I imagine that access would get severely tightened in times of crisis, too.

I'd think that access issue would be a deal-killer to a high-end retailer.

Most military bases require you to check in as a visitor. They ask for your state issued ID, proof of insurance (for vehicle), and reason/destination for being there. They print up a paper pass you keep with you. When you actually drive onto the base you are required to show the pass and your id. The pass is only good for that day though. I'm not sure if this is how Fort Sam Houston is though.

If you drive on base with military personnel (with id) all you must show is your state id.

in lackland you only have to show some sort of I.D and your in but I don't know much about FT. Sam
