I was hoping someone could provide some names of subdivisions in Helotes. We're a family of 5 and would like to live in an area where there are lots of families and possibly some sort of pool or rec area? The families don't all have to be "young" ...a steady mix would be awesome! House hunting and would like to stay under $300,000. I've seen some nice homes between 250-3 they we all really liked.

Any suggestions would be GREAT!

Wildhorse is a large community just south of Helotes but still outside of the SA city limits (so no city taxes) that has two pools and an elemntary school. In your price range, you will want to focus on the area closer to Braun Road.

I can also recommend a great realtor if you're interested. It will make your search a lot easier, he knows that area well!

Let me know and I will DM you his info.

Cheers! M2

I noticed that the traffic in that area completely sucks during rush hours and again on weekends at certain times. Are there any plans for road expansion/additions?

There is always the effort to expand 1604, the changes made at Shaenfield, New Guilbeau and Braun seems to have helped a bit.

We've found that there are easy ways to avoid the traffic and honestly we don't find it that bad to begin with so it's never really been a huge concern of ours.

It certainly wouldn't keep us from living in the Helotes area!

I see...but you said this in another thread:

"The downside is that this is a fast-growing part of San Antonio, and traffic can be bad during rush hour."

How much growth is expected? Knowing SA, that roadwork will take forever...and things will get worse before they improve.

I'd much rather be in the Helotes area during rush hour than over near Stone Oak. At its worst, traffic on 1604 northbound can get backed up from the Shaenfield intersection all the way back to where the Walmart is south of there. There are ways to avoid it, I either go outside to 1560 or usually just shift the hours that I work so I am out of the office by 3:00pm.

And that comment is compared to when we first moved into that area in 1999. We later left for three years (2002-2005) then came back and bought a house about a mile as the crow flies from our previous one. We were shocked at how much development had occurred during our absence, what is now Whitehorse was some nice ranchland and Braun Road outside of 1604 was a sleepy little two-laner to get to 1560!

Rush hour traffic is bad between Culebra and Bandera roads but as I said we use alternate routes off 1604 to avoid most of it!

Cheers! M2

Thanks everyone! I did see some nice houses in Iron Horse Canyon. I was just wondering if anyone could speak to living there?

Wilco. We PCS'd here twice, both times from overseas. Having a good realtor makes things considerably easier!

Cheers! M2
