Hey guys,

Relocating to the SATX area and will be working around Lackland/Kelly.

Will move family 6 months after I arrive and I will need a safe place for my family with decent public schools.

I was originally referred to the Converse area, but I have since read some negative things (on this board) with regards to gangs and "black clay" causing foundation issues.

Where do you guys suggest I look for homes in the 150-180k range with good safe neighborhoods?

Would Also like to be about 30mins from lackland/kelly is possible.

On a related note, I will be on my own for 6 months and will require a cheap 1 bedroom apartment while I sell my home. Will I be able to find a good clean/safe apartment for $700/mo? If so, where should I look?

You will most certainly be able to find an apartment in that range. I can't recommend an area however, but good luck.

Well you can start by looking over this thread in link below. Converse would be a poor choice simply for being on the opposite side of the city. Plenty of nice areas northwest of Lackland and Kelly outside 410. Even Castroville isn't too far. I'm sure others will chime in soon.

IMHO: Good places to live and not be too far from Lackland area are outside Loop 1604 West from Highway 90 North to Bandera Road. There are a lot of new subdivisions on Potranco and Culebra. A hot one is Alamo Ranch off Culebra (do a search using Alamo Ranch). The drive to Lackland is about 20-30 minutes (could be a little longer during peak traffic times) depending on how far North you go.

why did anyone suggest Converse? that's on the other side of town and especially during traffic would easily be a 45+ minute drive.
You should look for places on the far west side, they would be MUCH closer to Lackland and there are some nice homes/ neighborhoods out on/ past west 1604. Try Alamo Ranch or Potranco area

Well guys,

I've been offered a position in SATX and will be moving.

Again, initially it will be just myself and the family will move down at a later point in time (3-12 months).

I found a map on this forum that lists the most desired places for Lackland/Kelly workers. It looks like this:

If this area is still regarded as nice/safe I found these apartments listed, does anyone know anything about them?

apartments loc: +29° 31' 13.05", -98° 43' 20.85" (29.520293, -98.722458) - Google Maps

I created that map, and while I still consider it to be generally accurate; there is no guarantee that every neighborhood or apartment complex within the shaded area is safe!

But for someone working on Lackland or nearby, it is a good depiction of the area you should be focusing on if you want a relatively safe place to live that's within a half hour's commute of the base.

For the most part, the farther you get away from base the safer it is.

There are some nice apartments along 1604 north of 151, that is a fairly good area and the commute wouldn't be bad at all (that coming from firsthand experience).

Good luck with your move!

Cheers! M2
