My family has a tree that ever few years produces plenty of pecans. When the tree produces we dont ever have a problem with gathering alot of nuts. That being said our neighborhood has alot of cats in it, I guess they keep the squirrels down to a manageable level.

Funny, we do NOT have any pecan trees in our yard & I don't see any close by. That said, pecans (green) keep showing up in our yard! I'm guessing it's ones the squirrels drop? I've found at least 10 recently!

I definitely have a lot of squirrels stealing pecans from my tree and yard, but I just saw a new culprit: blue jays! I'd been hearing something that sounded like a woodpecker in my pecan tree. Sitting here at my window, I just watched a blue jay take a pecan out of the tree, push it against a stump on the ground, and then repeatedly smack the shell with its beak. Eventually, the shell broke, the nut fell out, and the blue jay ate it up. Who knew?!

Either that or you have an invisible pecan tree.

I've got cats outside and my trees still get stripped of pecans! I hate those nasty little creatures! I do have a new cat hanging around and he loves to scare the squirrels. I hope he catches them one day.

Yep, squirrels. For various reasons ie: extra long, extra cold winter, extra wet spring and really dry summer, and the fact that pecan trees have "dormant" seasons every couple of years, the pecan crop is very bad in the deep south this season. So, the squirrels are grabbing what they can, when they can. Unless your pecan tree is far enough away from other trees to prevent the squirrels from jumping tree to tree, there really isn't any practical way to stop the little thieves. And yes, they will go for a pecan before they will go for an acorn.
