FBI crime stats: Car thefts down, forcible rape numbers way up

SAN ANTONIO -- Many feared when the economy took a downward turn property crimes in San Antonio would go up. It seemed like a logical conclusion. But that has simply not been the case.

KENS 5's Brian New reports on the latest FBI crime numbers.

Car thefts may be down, but I'd bet car/RV/storage break-ins are still up.

Default 2009 San Antonio Metro Crime Statistics

Earlier this month, the FBI released its annual "Crime in the United States 2009 (http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2009/index.html - broken link)" report, containing crime statistics for cities across the country. In the table below, the number of violent and property crimes committed in 2009 are compared with the 2008 figures for cities and county agencies (Sheriff's Offices) in the eight-county San Antonio-New Braunfels Metropolitan Area. 2009 violent and property crime rates per 100,000 inhabitants are also included. Places that experienced an overall decrease in crime during 2009 are shown in Red.

The data used to create this table can be found at the following links:
TEXAS - Offenses Known to Law Enforcement, by State and City: 2008 Report (http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2008/data/table_08_tx.html - broken link), 2009 Report (http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2009/data/table_08_tx.html - broken link).

Statistics on property crimes being down are little consilation when they just kicked the door in at my parents house yesterday and stole all of my moms jewely. Wasn't really expensive stuff. Engagement ring etc. Things she had had all of her adult life. At 85 your adult life is a long time. I know, this has nothing to do with the overall crime statistics of the SA area. Just say'in.

I just can't fathom that the "actual" crime rate fluctuates as much as the statistics show. That property crime could be up 30% one year and down 15% the next, given the enormous number of individual crimes you are starting with seems statistically impossible.

Michael Dingman of San Antonio said he credits his high-tech alarm system on his Chrysler mini-van for the reason his vehicle has not been stolen

I am sorry but I found that statement kind of funny. Is it the "high-tech alarm system" or the fact that it is a mini-van?

That is pretty sad. Had any strangers visited her recently? Or visitors who had access to be able to see her jewels? I would bet it was someone who cased it before it happened even neighbors if they are always looking at the house.

Crime statistics reflect only those incidents that are reported. If events aren't reported crime rates are shown to decline. As the number of reported incidents increase a corresponding increase is observed in the statistics. I've observed that as cities get their acts together and really crack down on criminal elements...criminal activity tends to increase in suburban and rural areas. One reason for this is that in most areas Sheriffs Departments are grossly under funded and undermanned...they are ill prepared to deal with the criminal migration...Bexar County is an example of this. Another observation made regarding urban crime is that areas in cities undergoing regentrification tend to reflect much lower crime rates...higher profile law enforcement activity is observed and citizens become more active in assisting police keep the bad element out of these reclaimed neighborhoods where millions of $$ have been spnt by investors to reclaim them. Personally I'd like to see Bexar County transition to a county police department.

Do I ever share your frustration! I've been hit multiple times over the years, although most houses on my block-long street have never had a problem (I'm in the middle of the block). I finally had to break down and put double-keyed security grilles on my front and rear doors. Now I'm the only one on my street who has those things.

The last two times I was broken into, I spent more repairing damage done to the house during the break-in than the replacement cost of the property taken. In fact, in the most recent incident (last year), the replacement cost of the stolen property didn't even meet the deductible on my insurance.
