I was just wondering what kinds of experiences people have had with working at the LDS Church IT department. I'm a Java Software Developer and am considering pursuing some opportunities there. Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure you have to be temple recommended to get a job with the LDS. At least, that's what all the job postings I've seen say.

First off, are you LDS? You do have to be a member of the Church in good standing to be employed by any of its departments. Second, I really don't know anything about the Church's IT Department (I'm in IT myself), but I'm relatively sure the Church doesn't pay all that well, even for people in managerial positions. As an active Mormon myself, I really, really, really wouldn't want to work for the Church.

My husband is in IT and actually did an internship for the church and probably would of got on full time if it hadn't been for the hiring freeze in dec.08 (first hiring freeze in history by the church) Anyways now they seem to be expanding their IT department and the job market right now is pretty good. Although the IT department in the past really hasn't payed competitevely the church I think has realized that they need to step up their pay in order not to lose qualified IT people so the pay now is a bit more competitive. My husband would love to get on with the church and he has applied for quite a few IT jobs, one in particular is right up his alley in software development, but unfortunately the church is super mundo sloooww
and he has been waiting on it for almost 6 months now!!!

I've seen them listing loads of IT jobs, usually contract. Because they use many sources, many times recruiters, it isn't always mentioned that you have to have a temple recommend. From my experience, they always ask for that.

A colleague of mine's father works for the church in the financial area. He has stated in the past that the church pays similar to government and state jobs, and that his dad will get about 50% of his pay for retirement later on.

Is it legal for them to require you are a member of their church? Sounds like discrimination to me

Of course it's discriminatory, but it's definitely not illegal. Any church could have membership in the organization be a requirement for employment. Seriously, I think that anybody who was not LDS would find working for the Church extremely uncomfortable. I'm LDS and I wouldn't work for the Church no matter what they paid or what the benefits are.
