My husband has been offered a position working as an IT guy for the Church and we are seriously considering it. We have been married for a few years and looking to start our family soon and would like some suggestions on where to live. We want a short commute (under 20 minutes) young families, good schools, and nice neighborhoods. Can you give me some names of communities that fit the criteria? We will can commute via lightrail or car! and are looking to rent something under 1000 a month untill we find somewhere we really want to buy!

When we moved to Utah for work, we basically randomly picked Bountiful in south Davis County. 10 miles from downtown SLC and excellent commuting times. Also, SLC metro has a really good bus system. I think the Church provides discounted passes to employees.

However most of the IT department for the Church is now down in Riverton, so you might want to look at towns like Herriman, West/South Jordan, Sandy, Draper etc. Southern SL Valley towns. Some of the IT groups are still downtown, but most are in Riverton.

Good luck!

If indeed you'll be in Riverton working, there is little doubt the best choices are Herriman and Daybreak. Sharing perhaps the best schools, shopping and overall low crime and newer homes you can't go wrong there. Also with a new IHC hospital you could nearly ride your bike to and any commute would probably be less than 10 minutes.

Yes, it's critical to know which location for the job. Unfortunately, during the year, they could migrate him from downtown to the south. So, if the job is downtown, I would ask how long it will stay there and probably try to find a 6-month lease. That's not too hard around the U as they accommodate faculty and students.
