Because local politicians have a habit of taking money from local polluters, so they won't vote for pollution controls. Sort of like the civil rights movement having to occur at the national level, since it certainly wasn't going to have a local solution for a local problem!

I'm very hard pressed to see how this is going to happen in a way that would help the Wastach Front inversion, which is a peculiarly local problem. Utah is famously resistant to federal intervention of any kind on anything. Mike Lee is making a career out of opposition to federal programs and the federal govenment in general. His approval ratings are high. Same goes for Gov. Herbert.

There's a brilliant irony in your analogy to the civil rights movement. It took the feds and a nationally organized protest movement that literally invaded the south to bring about change. So what you're saying here is that the same thing should occur to fix a problem that the locals themselves could fix if they simply had the will to do so?

I am hoping that the negative publicity and the impact it will have on tourism will snap a light bulb on for those that worry about their pockets!! Hope!!!

We have been in Utah for 20 years and the greater SL Valley since 08. Last January had many bad days but that was the only time that he ever commented on smog since we moved down here. If we get a good snowy season, the storms scrub it out of the valley so I am jpeful for great snow for many, many reasons..
Yeah, no reflexive anti-L.A. sentiment there, eh?

Those particulate pollution readings -- preserved on the maps at airnow.gov -- during this past winter's inversion episodes were some kind of awful. A big red blob of awfulness while SoCal looked comparatively pristine. Doesn't mean L.A. isn't worse most other times. And then there is the matter of ozone. But God forbid the possibility that for a few weeks out of the year, northern Utah's air may in fact be worse - way worse - than L.A.'s.

Nope, not "anti Los Angeles" at all as we still have many friends in Los Angeles and visit often.
The only "reflex" as you call it, that he has, is being able to breathe better in Salt Lake than in Los Angeles.

Experts: look to cars, not industry, when assigning blame for inversions

Area residents who point fingers at Kennecott and other Salt Lake County and other Wasatch Front industries misunderstand the sources and, ultimately, the causes of so-called inversions. Patrick Barickman, an environmental program manager at the Utah Division of Air Quality (DAQ), said annual measurements of emissions inventories in the airshed show that industry sources, including Kennecott and five major refineries, produce a fraction of Wasatch Front pollution, while passenger vehicles produce more emissions than all other sources put together.

I can already see an inversion building today. First one I've noticed this season.
