The proof is in the stats. Clean the air fix the cost of education. A new study released March 29, 2012 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports boys born in Utah have a 1 in 32 chance of being autistic, the highest risk in the nation.
Larry Shumway, Utah’s superintendent of public instruction, is anticipating an increase in autistic children throughout the state’s schools.
The average per-pupil expenditure for educating a child with autism was estimated by SEEP to be over $18,000 in the 1999-2000 school year. This estimate was nearly three times the expenditure for a typical regular education
Exposure to air pollution in utero or during the first year of life may double a person's risk of developing autism, according to a study conducted by researchers from the University of Southern California (USC) and Children's Hospital Los Angeles.

and these people get on my case as a whiner about Kennecott. They are the single largest contributor to the detriment of the health of those in the Salt Lake area but everyone continues to bury their heads in the sand as usual.....toxic sand no less. Not sure I'll be alive to watch the cancer clusters that will develop for those residing in the Daybreak development. It astounds me how people look the other way when $$$ is involved.

We lived a while in Spanish Fork, and there were many days that everyone in our neighborhood would have to stay inside when the inversion drifted down from the Salt Lake Valley to us. Like some have said it burned the eyes, and made it hard for us to breathe. We had Maple Mountain practically right outside our front door, and many days we could not even see it in the middle of the day. Sometimes we would take a drive up the Nebo Loop, and at the top, look back toward the town, and couldn't see anything but a gray-brown cloud in our valley. I agree 100% that something should be done about the pollution in the Salt Lake Valley, and surrounding area, but it isn't quiet that simple. Passing laws and enforcing regulations would help, but the whole process of cleaning the air is hindered by the geography of the Valley. It is basically a long bowl all the way from Salt Lake to Santiquin, and it forms a natural path for the smog to follow. I would like someone to find a solution, because like other's have posted, it is a beautiful area, but it is a multi-faceted solution.
