However, the evening commute is consistently clogged up. If there's anyway for you to avoid I-80 between Greenback and the 65 split, learn the side roads and you'll save yourself 15-20 minutes/day. Unfortunately, it's tricky with the RR tracks cutting running along the the freeway - you'll swear "you can't get there from here" when you're just a few yards on the wrong side of the tracks!

For me, the more frustrating commute are the days I need to go down to Rancho Cordova. Sunrise southbound is a mess anytime in the morning, as is Sunrise northbound in the evening. Trying Hazel/Sierra College (a mile east of Sunrise) is equally frustrating. Clearly, this part of Sacramento could use a limited-access freeway type road, but clearly, that's not going to happen. Going N-S on the eastern side of Sacramento will always be a real ordeal.

But all of this pales in comparison to fighting the Caldecott, the Sunol Grade, or the Eden Canyon in the Bay Area.
You definetly got it right on the trends, learning quickly! I felt very lucky these past few months commuting to downtown from 80 at 4pm, and returning at 8pm. Anything else is hard to do.
