There is the possibility my boyfriend and I may be relocating to the Sac area for a job in Roseville.
What areas between downtown and Roseville would be good places for a young, progressive, not-so-conservative couple to live?
We are trying to avoid a commute of more than 30 minutes to Roseville, and I will be (tentatively) attending Sacramento State, so we would like a place kind of in the middle, that's not so suburbanish.
THANKS!

Are you renting or buying? What is your budget?

I'm assuming no kids?

How much space do you want?

(avoid Roseville then, it's nice and clean and nothing but the suburbs up there)

We'll probably start out renting, but buy after 6 months.
NO kids. And I don't really want to be around them (I know that sounds mean, but I just don't dig the family scene.)
We have two dogs though, and need a yard with a fence. We want at least 1400 sq ft, 2 beds, 2 baths if we can find it.
My boyfriend just doesn't want to commute a lot. He drives an hour now before and after work so we're trying to cut down on that (not to mention gas money, yikes!)
Is it feaseable to have a pool there? Or is the weather too finicky during the winter?
Thanks!!!

I can't think of any place that's not so suburbanish in between downtown Sacramento and Roseville--in fact, the area is pretty much defined by its suburban-ness. You have your pick of (west to east) Arden-Arcade, North Highlands, Antelope and Citrus Heights. All are about as suburban as a suburb can possibly be.

Your best bet might be the East Sacramento area. It's close to Sac State, and for Roseville you would at least be traveling in the opposite direction of the bulk of commuters (who come west towards Sacramento in the morning and east towards Roseville in the afternoon.) The area itself is quite pleasant, it's more of an old streetcar suburb but walkable, well-served by public transit, and pretty close to the central city.

I was going to say East Sac too, it's very close to Sac State. Your boyfriend is going to have a commute no matter what - and it will be a doozy. That's just the way Sac is, it's a commuter city

You did not say how much your price tag is. East Sac is a vintage area. Large lush trees, old 1940s, 1950s houses, but they are pricey. And with two dogs (how big are they) sometimes it's hard to rent.

You probably won't have a pool. You can use the one at CSUS if you like.

The more hip young area (or less kids area if you wish) is also Midtown, but finding a house there will be a bit harder.

Oh yeah and buying in that area will also be expensive - it's a nice area and holds it's value well

Try craigslist to get a feel for the areas

We'd probably be looking in the $1500-2000 for rent, $150,000 to $250,000 to buy.

Tahoe Park is the outskirts to East Sac.

You will EASILY rent a house with your budget

YOU WILL NOT BUY A HOUSE AT ALL WITH THAT BUDGET - Midtown/East Sac homes are going to be 400K and much higher (depending on how big you want, but being vintage homes they have small sqft)
