Just curious. If a person who had school age children were attending UC Davis where would you recommend living for best schools/safe/and not super expensive? It sounds like Davis is really nice, but expensive? Are there any areas not too far of a drive from Davis that would make sense? Thanks all.

Are you single?? Are you okay with renting?

You could rent in Davis - it's very nice there

And the commute from FOlsom or Roseville will suck big time, probably the worst commutes possible

The drive from Folsom is much better than from Roseville, though both will be pretty long. I would guess that in rush hour you would be looking at 75-90 minutes from Roseville, and about 50-70 minutes from Folsom (assuming you choose the far western end).

Married, with soon to be mid-school age child. I'm taking classes at a community college here, but may want to finish at Davis. I just was wondering if any good schools close enough I could drive to Davis, or makes more sense to just love there. It will be 1-2 years, but I like to have plans made if possible, so am researching now. Renting will be fine. I'm hoping in the 1-2 year time frame we can sell our house here in La Quinta.

You can get from Roseville to Davis in as little as 40-45 minutes, even in or near prime commute times, depending on where you live in Roseville and which part of Davis you're trying to get to. We live in West Roseville and my wife is a school teacher in Davis; she leaves in the morning at 7AM and leaves work at about 4PM. The secret: take Main/Baseline/Riego Road west until it hits 99, avoiding the worst part of 80 entirely. Take 99 South to I-5. From there you can proceed on I-5 South to 80 West, OR do what my wife does, take I-5 North to Woodland and then County Road 102 or Hwy 113 South to Davis.
