Is Placerville more mountain, desert or country living. From the pictures I am able to find it appears downtown is a beautiful historic area, what type of shopping do they have, how far do you have to go for a major grocery store or shopping mall. It sure looks beautiful from all the pictures I have seen. Would it be a good active retirement community. My husband enjoys riding his motorcycle on Saturday mornings so the weather needs to be fairly clear most of the time. We currently reside in Southern California, and it's just to busy and crowded.

Definitely not desert. I don't think I'd call it mountains either. Foothills definitely. Country? Not in town. Placerville is like most of the larger foothill towns along Highway 49.

You wouldn't have to leave P'ville for most shopping, the big ticket items, malls, etc are just down the hill in Sacramento. Probably 300 days of sunshine/year and great roads for riding.

Placerville is a nice little town in the rolling Sierra foothills. The hills are mostly full of oak and pine. There's plenty of shopping outside of the downtown area such as Safeway, Home Depot, K-Mart, etc.

The one downside is that Hwy 50 goes through town and the traffic can be bad with people going to and from Lake Tahoe on the weekends.

Yes, having two traffic lights on highway 50 in Placerville does cause quite a bit of congestion. I often wonder if they leave it that way on purpose so people will stop and get gas or go shopping.

Rolling foothills, but some of those hills can be quite steep. Very pretty area with a lot of trees. It becomes very rural within a few miles going east from Placerville.

Just to piggyback on this thread, b/c we are looking at placerville as well. [Family with 11 yr old] I've read a few threads discussing the air quality in the foothills. Is Placerville as 'bad' as they say Auburn's is? And is this summer months, for how long, and what does it 'equate to', in terms of day to day reality? I've lived in a valley with an inversion layer before, in a small logging city, so i'm familiar with the unpleasantness of this. Is it similar, in terms of causing allergies, bad smells thru town, etc? Thanks for any further info on this issue and placerville! Good luck to OP, as well. (:
