I agree with the last two posters

The South Wedge is close to U of R, has a growing nightlife and is not far from shopping, and has a lot of older houses with character.

Look also at the streets between South Ave and Mt. Hope from Alexander south to Elmwood. These are kind of forgotten and are good neighborhoods. You can head South of the U of R (south of Elmwood) towards Lattimore and those are great houses too, and that taks you closer to the older suburb of Brighton and shopping suburb of Henrietta.

Check out Park and East Ave too and go down the side streets. Stay south Of Main Street.

On the other side of the river form the U of R is Brooks Landing in he 19th Ward. Stay south of Arnett and you will find a redeveloping community choc full of great 19th and early 20th century homes.

In general stay to the southern city neighborhoods. Those on the east are preferable, but those on closest to the river on the west side are good (Corn Hill/ Lower 19th Ward).

As for suburbs - East Rochester can be affordable and a bit funky and Fairport is pretty cool too.

As for tours that is a bit tougher.

PS welcome - the U of R is a great school on a neat campus.

We're in Louisville & also may be moving to Rochester this summer. I find out if I'm accepted mid-April. I hope you'll tell us how your visit went.

Did any part of the area fit what you were looking for?

I think we'll end up in South Wedge. I loved the Park Avenue area, but it's too expensive for what we want.

Nice and I figured that one of the SE neighborhoods would work, given where you were coming from in Louisville.

We'll be mostly be looking into South Wedge as well. I'd love to find a place in the Park or East Ave area, especially since I'd be spending most of my time (Hopefully!) at the George Eastman House. But we may not be able to swing the price & also pay extra for our two cats. Crossing my fingers that we'll be visiting in late April!

Just curious...why the move from Louisville to Rochester? Louisville has lots more going for it at this point from growth and size and urbanism to jobs and especially, much warmer

The original post said for grad school, which is why most people move to Rochester.
