I'm being offered a job in Rochester that is located at the eastern edge of the city. I'm just graduating from college so I'll need either an apartment or house to live in. Based on the salary they told me (need to get it in writing still) I should be able to afford around $1000-$1400 in rent or mortgage/taxes/etc. Two things I would really like to have are a garage and my own laundry in-unit. The laundry shouldn't be hard to find in either case, but finding an apartment/townhome with a garage would be more challenging. I also do a lot of my own projects/vehicle maintenance, so there would be power tools involved which could annoy neighbors.
Really what I'm trying to figure out is where in Rochester I should be looking (sounds like the Penfield/Webster area), and whether I should be looking for a house or an apartment. I have seen some townhomes that can be had with a garage, so there's that. I would prefer to be in the country, so being in the city wouldn't be enjoyable for me but a suburb might be tolerable if the houses aren't too close together. I'm also not afraid of a fixer upper as long as it doesn't need major structural/plumbing/electrical work. That being said I'm not afraid to tear down (non-structural) walls or gut bathrooms/kitchens.
