That is an excellent idea, but it assumes that the RCSD wasn't run by a bunch of incompetent, overpaid fools who care little about the children and more about holding a position of "power" Unfortunately, we'll never see such a program come to fruition, and if it does I'm sure it'll be surrounded by so much red tape it'd be useless anyways.
You never know, considering that Duffy thought about taking over the school district duties. What he would do with that responsibility is another thing though.
To be fair, the property tax statistic reported yesterday says as much about the modest prices of homes in Monroe County as is does about the level of property taxes. If housing prices magically doubled tomorrow, the reported tax rate would be cut in half. Despite this, I suspect no one would be any happier living in a "middle of the pack" county where taxes were concerned.

Exactly! People forget that the stat is about the rate and that the overall housing/property price could be higher in other parts of the country. So, people have to put the information into proper perspective. When you can find decent to nice homes in just about any suburban community for 150k in the area and are many times, bigger than homes in other parts of the country that cost more, you might end up paying less in the Rochester area, in many cases.

EXACTLY! here we go again with ROchester complaining about their taxes and the media adding to it... why not do a report about the positives of Monroe county, like,yes, you can buy a really,REALLY nice house for less than $200K.! How about that?
Other areas still in this Real Estate Environment, starter homes start in the low $200's. Not beautiful ,4 bedroom, upgraded homes.
As much as we love Rochester as our home town, the whining gets so ridiculous. Try living in other areas where the cost of living is twice as much. Everything.
Wegman's is one of the lowest priced Supermarkets around, they even boast their prices against GIANT (Where we shop in the mid-atlantic). My parents always comment on how much more $ it is to shop here for groceries then at home at Wegman's.
So yes, NYS has horrible taxes, Monroe county may have the highest property taxes, but your cost of living in general, as a whole, is MUCH less than other areas only a few short hours from you.

I suspect a lot of the folks on here have very different ideas of what "comparable" means in this context. Out of curiosity, Howard, what would you pay for a median home in the best (Pittsford-equivalent) neighborhood/suburb of Greenville, SC and what would the taxes be?
Other comparable metros have slightly higher home prices, but much lower taxes.
