My husband and I are planning a move to Richmond, Va within the year. We currently live in Memphis, TN.
I would like to know if anyone could give us some information of the least dangerous places to live in. I am a senior in college looking to work in a major hospital, and my husband is a truck driver. We both have grown children, so we don't need the club/bar scene nearby. We both enjoy horses and hiking. We are also both Christians.
I would also like to know if anyone could tell us how it is to live in Richmond. Is it expensive? Do native Virginians accept newcomers? Anything you can tell me would be appreciated.
Thank you!!!!!

Smile Hanover? New Kent?

Hey.. Whynot move to Roanoke va? Our hosptial is currently expanding :-). The cost of living is al ot cheaper than Richmond and its safer.. but if Richmond is truely your thing go for it. Richmond is a nice town I grew up there.. I guess its just not what I wanted anymore.. I would reccomend Hanover County.. its very safe, has great schools (though you have grown children), and they welcome newcommers (most of the newer communities such as Kings Charter and Pebble Creek are transplants!). The cost of living is more expensive than Roanoke but less expensive than Nova. I would say a 3 bedroom 2 bath modest ranch style house in an older neighborhood of Hanover County would run you around $250k or so but a newer 4 bedroom 2.5 bath in Kings Charter would be more like $350-$400k, the same house in Pebble Creek would be like $270k or so. Also I see that you like horses you could try looking in New Kent co. its near hanover and you may be able to find a nice sized horse farm somewhere around there. Good luck if you have anymore questions let me know!

Richmond is a major market for people in the medical fields. There are 3 major hospital systems which are constantly growing (See VCU Health System, Bon Secour Richmond, and HCA Richmond). How far of a commute do you want and would you like to be in a more rural setting?

The vast majority of crime in the Richmond area is highly concentrated in certain areas. Overall you'll find it to be safer than some of its peer metro areas like Charlotte, Jacksonville, Louisville, Nashville, Birmingham, etc.

You can find more quantifiable information comparing the Richmond area to its peers in 6 key areas here:
http://www.grcc.com/files/2007_Competitive_Analysis_Report_Oct07_Final.pdf (broken link)

The cost of living is certainly less in Roanoke than Richmond, but on average the pay/incomes will be lower as well.

I too am looking to relocate to Richmond this year. I have a 6 year old daughter who will be starting first grade so I need to find a good school district where we will most likely rent for the first half the year, and then find a house. I have heard the West End is a good area. How are the taxes though? We will be taking a hit on our home that we sell so we'll most likely have to save up for a down payment. I am not sure if Richmond is going to be a good fit for our family, but it feels right to us from our visits. We are looking for a neighborhood with a lot of kids, sidewalks, friendly neighbors, swim team, tennis, good shopping. Any suggestions would be ideal. Thank you!!
