Areas that welcome transplants?

So you've never moved? Anywhere? Even if you've moved from Nova to Richmond, guess what you're a transplant. Transplants don't necessarily = what you've stated. Let's say 100 move to the area, and then 100 people leave the area, how does that equal more sprawl? From all the data that I've seen regarding the Richmond area the population has been consistently around 200k for almost the last ten years...

The Richmond "area" has over 1.2 million people, up from just over 1 million in 2000... during which time the area has sprawled (as in used up land and it expands out from the core) substantially. Blaming the problems associated with sprawl on new folks to an area is futile since life long residents contribute to sprawl just as much as anyone. The city itself has consistently remained around 200,000 for some time now.

I find the use of the term 'transplant' interesting. Where I've lived for the past ten-plus years (not anywhere near VA), we are called 'people from away,' so you're either from here or you're 'from away.' That term does give the impression that you'll never fit in. The term 'transplant' sounds almost hopeful to me, since when you transplant a plant, you're taking it from one environment where it had placed its roots and you're putting it into another environment where it can now place its roots. I think I'd rather be called a 'transplant' than to be looked at as 'from away.'

Good analogy! I prefer to be called a "transplant" as well. In fact I moved to Roanoke a year ago from Richmond.. I've heard several people refer to me as a "transplant".
