I am new here but need some advice if anyone can help, Im in the process of relocating to either Houston or Richmond for medical residency/fellowship.

The problem is that I am a single parent with two soon to be 5th grader children(twins) and so I have to live in a safe neighborhood with good Public schools but at the same time live somewhere that has low commuting time to and from downtown Richmond by VAMC/VCU area and also live where there are schools that offer after school care.

Anyone with any of these info about richmond area pls help. Ideally, I would like commute time of 20min or less Thanks!

I am not sure that any schools in this area offer after school care. I could be wrong though. The way it seems to work is you pick a center and the bus picks them up at school and takes them to the after school program. Once you choose a school, you can ask the school which after school programs pick up (my school has about 3 or 4 choices).

You could live anywhere in Henrico and have a commute of less than 30 minutes. Closer in to the city would get you below 20 minutes, but the schools are better (on paper at least) a little farther west. In Henrico you want to look in 23233 or 23059. Lots of the best elementaries in the state in this part of the county. Middle schools are strong too since that would be an issue for you next year. It is an extremely safe and family friendly area. Midlothian might also be a good option--again safe and excellent schools.

You may already be familiar with these resources but these are the two sites I used when chosing a neighborhood:

SchoolDigger.com - School Rankings, Reviews and More - Public and Private Elementary, Middle, High Schools
GreatSchools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community

You can also check the Chester area. My son is followed at VCU and it is 22 miles to the parking garage - we've been doing this drive for 4 years, prior to that we were coming from Fredericksburg! The public schools are good in Chester and you hop on I95 at Exit 61 (VCU Medical Campus is Exit 74). Feel free to DM if you have any other questions!!

My family is also relocating to Richmond area at the end of the year. I have done extensive research of Richmond and have concluded to rent a house in 23233 or 23238. I have a 7 and 16 year old sons and schools and safe neighborhoods are my priority. Hope you find what your looking for in Richmond.

Pick the residency, not the city. And what are you planning to do about call?

I don't know about after school care, but the Fan is pretty popular with residents for a reason. So is Shockoe, but that wouldn't apply to you. Bellevue would also work well. You are fine on city schools through end of elementary school (might not be enough time granted) provided they are mary munford, Linwood Holton, or Fox.

Unless you have external income, budget is going to be an issue.

Thanks to all who have taken their time to reply me, I greatly appreciate everyone's input, I think since i will be a fellow( no longer a resident), my schedule will be lighter and I can manage the commute from Glen Allen or Midlothian, so I will focus more on those places.
I welcome more info/ideas, thanks

your going to love the traffic by comparison. MCV will have the usual pluses and minuses of a tertiary care center
