We are possibly coming to visit for the weekend next weekend (my husbands birthday). We were originally thinking of staying in New London CT area, but we also have an option for a place to stay near downtown Newport. Will things be open or will it be a ghost town? Are there many activities we could do? Wine tours maybe?

Newport's never a ghost town. There's always the mansion tours, the art museum, and the spectacular views.

Yeah, Newport won't be a ghost town. Many (if not most) of the restaurants are open and there's always going on. Newport's got the Naval Academy and Salve Regina University to compliment a population of about 25,000. While it's more active in the summer, Newport's never "dead."

I'd take Newport over Mystic/New London. I like New London (highly underrated IMHO), but I think you'd enjoy Newport more.

Sakonnet Vineyard over in Little Compton is decent. Not exactly in Newport but reasonably close.

Newport Vineyards is right in the area. I know some people who really enjoy Greenvale. I've never been so I can't comment.

My favorite is a little further away but worth the drive. Westport Rivers puts out some really quality stuff and the Vineyard is beautiful. They also own a brewery (Buzzard's Bay/ Just Beer).
