So, husband I moved to NC in April 2008...sort of a pre-retirement move. Our kids had moved away - daughter/son in law, 3 grandchildren to China and my son, his wife (they now have a new baby) to NY. We were looking for a somewhat slower pace. We really like it here very much and if you had asked me a year ago if we would ever return to RI, the answer would have been a resounding "No!".

Fast forward to 2011. My daughter and her family are being transferred back to RI after 4-1/2 yrs in China. They just bought a home on the East Side. My son/his wife and baby are only 3 hours away from Prov. We're starting to have "pangs"...wishing to be closer and see our grandchildren often. Tough to pick up and move again...we own a home, have good jobs and are only 9 years from retirement. For now, we'll be visiting often.

Just venting...pining for home a bit. Isn't hindsight 20/20? Thanks for listening.

We had done the same, left RI for a better quality of life. Now that we had children our distance from home really hits home. We visit as much as we can. Coming home to RI is hard also as it seems a lot of the vibrancy is gone (we left in 89) and a lot of family and friends are going through some tough times. We would give up a great quality of life and affordability to move back (we have been debating this) so we find ourselves staying here for the time being. In the long run you will be ahead in NC. It seems the economy didn't hit to bad in NC and a lot of Floridians are heading your way. Good luck

Me 2; always homesick for the family and all the lifelong friends there. Moved here, lost 2nd hubby, and just retired. Time to think seriously about putting my house on the market here in the mountains and going back. It's not easy to go back! Cost of living here is low, cost of living there is high. You can't follow your kids around, what if they move again 3 yrs. from now, can you keep on truckin'. Luckily in this area lots of FL buyers want to come here, if they can sell theirs in FL, that's the trick.

If you're retired, I really think the snowbird thing is the best solution. I'd probably just rent a different place every year though. I don't know if I'd be up for either staying in the same location every year or owning out of state property...

In some ways Rhode Island is tough to leave. Life long friends, who have stayed in close proximity are alway hard to leave and forget. But the key is "close proximity" ...Rhode Island is so small it leads to close relationships with friends and relatives. Everyone is no more than an hour away, you almost have no choice but to stay close. A person I know and respect gave me some advise, visit Rhode Island, see your family and friends, just don't move back or purchase property.
