People, from all over the world are superficially friendly. I've traveled extensively and have had a fabulous time - whether I speak the language or not. I think, the trick is, to never get close, never talk about politics - because once you do - it all goes away.

This is actually quite true. It's not the only truth, and it might not sustain you for longterm but it's absolutely the best start. I even find that when walking into a room of new people, for example, I don't have to necessarily be SMILING ear to ear, but if I have smiled and then relax, there is an approachability that seems to register to others.
