If your wife ends up providing any daily child care, please ask for a reasonable amount of money. Don't allow her to be taken for granted.

Burg lifer here. Lots of quiet, green neighborhoods depending on what you're looking for. Nothing wrong with doing what's best for your marriage, despite siblings, etc...

Long term, PA is one of 6 states that impose an inheritance tax.

Just something to think about.

Here are the six: Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Nebraska, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Yes. Husband and his brothers moved their mom out of a PA nursing home for that reason. Inheritance preservation.

Odd, but the articles I have found all rate PA as favorable for low income taxes as a retiree, but the civility doesn't extend to your heirs after your passing. If you are a resident of PA, all of your assets are included for PA Inheritance Taxes. If you are not a resident of PA but you own real property within the state, that property is subject to PA Inheritance Taxes.
Far too early in the decision analysis to worry about that.

I would say a big hard NO to the wife being the primary daycare for your grandchild whether she is paid or not.

One day a week, tops.

She would probably enjoy it more being back up day care.

Isn't your cost of living going to increase in Pittsburgh?

I would not want my parents four blocks away.

OP, you may know this already. PA does not tax any retirement income.

PA does not tax retirement income. That's the favorability you have heard of.

There are a bunch of good cost of living comparators on the internet. Plug in the nearest Michigan city of similar size and Pittsburgh, and see how they stack up:

If your kids are up for it, I'd do it. The fact that you have a job waiting makes it an easy decision. And this is coming from someone who lives in the Pittsburgh suburbs.
