Call the landlord IMMEDIATELY and tell her you have an emergency electrical problem, that you smell burning, etc. and that she needs to send a licensed electrician out IMMEDIATELY or else you'll do so yourself. This is not something to be waffling over nor taking time to write on a forum about. If she wavers or says her son will be out, tell her this isn't acceptable and this is something a licensed electrician needs to take care of. I suggest that you shut off all your breakers before further damage is done as you're in danger of having a major fire. Been there done that.
Oh, and I hope you have renter's insurance! If not, get it in a hurry.
I ended up calling our local electrical company. They came out and discovered that the lines coming in from the pole to the house had been chewed through and violated by what they believe to be squirrels. As the utility worker removed our meter, repaired the lines and enjoyed his overtime pay for the 6 or so hours it took to resolve that issue: he joked about zombie squirrels and that the lines were sure to have started a fire eventually had we not called them. The landlord and her helper had agreed to give the following month to us without rent due if they cold not resolve the isses and repairs. As they (the electric company) only resolved one problem..clearly, the most important, shouldn't I have still been given the rent free month if the other issues on the list I gave her were not repaired by the first of the month???

Don't get carried away. The main problem was taken care of, you were given a month's free rent and anything else that needs to be repaired will fall under state landlord tenant laws which generally require that the landlord fix properly requested (i.e. in writing) necessary repairs within "a reasonable time". Read your state landlord tenant laws which you'll probably find linked in the first "sticky" on this page.
