To the OP. In most areas, if someone lives in a property for 30 days they are legally considered a tenant whether or not there is a lease or if rent is paid. Give him the proper Notices according to your jurisdiction and follow the law as it applies to you. Get some help from the court where evictions are filed; they will have the forms and self-help info that you need.
To Chonga, yes, if he properly Notices you he certainly can. I would not call it an eviction unless you refuse to follow the law and vacate with due process having been served upon you, but an owner has every right to serve a 30 or 45 day "no reason" (whatever time period applies) to month to month tenants. If you don't comply the eviction proceedings can be filed and executed. Were you served a Notice the right amount of days preceding the date he wants you out?
If your landlord gave you 30-days notice ... it may be legal. This sort of thing changes sometimes from state-to-state but without a pre-signed agreement in your hands it become a he said/she said type of thing.
Maybe work out a better deal for your landlord if you think you can cope with at least some of the utility cost.
Always best to have it in writing - and never ever rent from or to friends.
My home was sold and the new landlord wants me out or pay outrageous amount of rent for my home. (not worth it in this area) I am purchasing a new home and closing won't be for a month and a half, mid may. I do NOT have a lease right now here and I have NOT gotten a written notice to leave. Everything has been verbal, but I can't afford to pay rent on top of a deposit on a new home and expense of a moving truck and hiring help. I support myself. I am in Florida. Does anyone have any idea what, if any, rights do I have? It is going to cost over 1500 dollars to get the new place (is an AS IS home sale) to where I can move it and feel safe. (garage door is broken and off the track. No stove or refrigerator)

You're considered legally on a month to month lease agreement even though it was verbal and your LL is required to give you a 30 day written notice of quit and 30 days written notice of any rent increase. Presumably you have receipts for rental payments (cancelled cheques or cash receipts)? Since you're only a month and a half away from taking over your new home, wait it out!
Thanks for the response. I have cancelled checks and just wish he would leave me alone to move. This is hard enough as it is. This is just another investment to him, but this was my home and I love it. It is breaking my heart to move. I am scared to come home after work.
i currently have no lease at my apartment. i called my landlord to let him know that my fridge has been leaking my bathroom outlets dont work and my stove only 2 burners work and you can smell gas coming from the stove. he never called me back- i sent a written letter to the maintance women also and she came down and looked and said she would let the landlord know. today i call because my fridge now isnt working at all and all the stuff in it went bad. i pay my rent on time i feel that i am good tenant and keep to myself. he procced to yell at me and tell me what a trouble maker i was and i only cause problems and that he kicks people out all the time... big time ranting and raving. my question is can he evict me for no reason at all?

If you have a lease he either has to wait for the lease to expire, or terminate the lease based on grounds that you violated the lease. If you don't have a lease you are on a month to month lease, which means he has to give you 30 day written notice. If there is gas leaking I'd call the gas company immediately.
Why would you want to remain a tenant in this guys buidling? I'd be happy to break the lease.
