I suggest that you give notice and move out. Problem solved.

That's the benefit of renting over buying, you are not stuck there. You can move if there is a problem.

Ceilings are very easy to cut the drywall out and patch, we've done it, Lowe's and HD has pertri kits for sale $10.00 very easy to tell if you have a real problem,

It should not have just been painted over, but talk to the LL, no one wants anyone to move, and the weather is going to get cold...

Hard to say maybe the Handyman shortchanged the job, but the LL wants it done right...

More slum tenants out there than slumlords...
