Many places around here have issues with gators. A co worker of mine lives in a very nice gated community....they have issues with gators in their lake. Just a month or so ago the game warden removed a 6ft gator that was thought to have eaten some cats and small dogs.

Still, we have some dumbasses who think it's ok to feed the gators It's sad that we had to create a law to stop these morons from doing it. Once gators get fed from humans, they expect to fed from humans and sometimes feed on the humans themselves.

Blows my mind how dumb ppl are.

Uuugh, yeah. If you want to feed the gators, just jump into the lake and wait. That way the rest of us don't have to deal with your stupidity!

We'd then have to deal with a man-eater, but of the two, I think I'd prefer the gator.

I prefer my gator breaded and deep fried. Gator tail is yumo.

Ooooh yum. That sounds delicious. Especially with some sort of cajun dipping sauce. Darn you pregnancy cravings!

In Montana, you can get a fine for having a bird feeder out IF it is attracting bears, raccoons, skunks ect...A bird feeder is considered an animal attractant regardless of what type of animal it is attracting.

Wow, oddly enough there was a bear in my backyard a few nights ago happily munching on the neighbor's bird feeder.
I just looked it up and several states (mine included) have laws against "attracting" bears.

The fine in NJ is $1000 and in Pima County, AZ the max is $2500 or/and up to 6 months in jail, yikes...

I feed birds and squirrels and I also put out a bird bath. I have not looked at my lease and so far after 20yr with the same landlord... no one has said anything. Another neighbor literally plants a garden, with even corn growing next to their door. I have a great landlord!!!

At my previous complex, there were many ponds. Every one of them had several signs around the perimeter featuring a depiction of an alligator, mouth agape, and the words "no swimming, no fishing, never feed alligators". I can't even tell you how many times I saw people standing there, leaning against the sign, fishing. Often with tiny dogs and/or toddlers in tow, playing along the bank. They seemed to find this small defiance quite amusing. Most of them were doing catch and release, but I talked to one guy who said he ate the fish! From the same pond that accepts the stormwater runoff from the parking lots. I've seen people encouraging their dogs to jump in and swim in these same waters.

It's not like they had good reason to disregard these signs - during the time I lived there, multiple alligators were spotted and eventually removed from various ponds throughout the complex. How they defeated the fencing I do not know, but a determined alligator is a force to be reckoned with.

Some people just have to learn these things the hard way.

I think the problem is, some people either:
  • Just don't really care about anything like that. If they want to do X, they will do X unless a P.O. stops them.
  • Are pretty stupid and just don't connect the dots.

People AND laws can be stupid at the same time. A few summers ago we had a problem black bear. I also had a miniature pony stallion in my barn and corral. He was a breeding/(money producing) animal. The barn I had him in is open on one side with stalls accessible from the outside. This bear kept getting into our garbage as well as our neighbors (elderly couple) garbage. Every morning I would pick up the garbage and head over to the neighbors to help them pick theirs up. After a month of this, I called the fish & game to see if our new game warden could set a trap and re-locate the bear. Our previous game warden would've been all too happy to do this as I have small children and numerous pets and livestock. Montana law states that livestock owners have the right to protect/defend property including but not limited to cows, horses, sheep, pigs, goats, chickens, ducks, geese (you get the picture). Well, the game warden came by and proceeded to inform me and my elderly neighbors that he was going to ticket us for bear attractants. Garbage dumpsters should be placed inside a bear proof building OR vehicle. When I explained that my barn was open on one side and I had no other outbuildings to put it in, he told me to pull the garbage dumpster into my HOUSE every night. Are you kidding me? I was already a step ahead. I told him I would put the garbage in the only outbuilding I had as keeping it in my house with my children would be a healthcode violation. I then said "when the bear steps into my barn, I'll shoot it for threatning my studhorse, then I'll call you to come pick the dead bear up and while you are out there, you can put the garbage dumpster back out onto the street". He got the picture. Sometimes, the laws are so stupid you can't help but be sarcastic.
