Sure, there is always going to be a certain segment of the school population that is disruptive, but I've not seen or heard anything that leads me to believe Damonte Ranch H.S., either the students or the faculty, is worse than other schools in our region.
My wife, who just quit working there due to unresponsive and lazy Admin and staff.

Just FYI.
Thank you for the response. We were talking in terms of proximity -- definitely more accessible than from Phoenix! To have these two incredible wonders of nature so near is definitely appealing.

Now another topic... how does the area generally seem to be responding to the current economic crisis? Does the gaming industry provide some stability? Or are there noticeable signs of trouble?

The economy is NOT good nationally, and it's NOT better in Reno. For the first time in many years Washoe County's unemployment rate is higher than the national average. I've noticed a sharp increase in the number of businesses/restaurants that have closed locally in the past year (many of which are chains). Places such as On the Border, Linens-n-Things, Mervyns, Cortina, Shoe Pavilion, CompUSA, Krispy Kreme, Nestle Toll House, Tin Star, World Board Shop, Reno Import Center Car dealership, Lithia Suzuki (abandoned their Sparks building and moved in to the Lincoln/Mercury/Audi dealership on Virginia Street), etc.

Gaming is down, and whatever happens in the gaming sector effects all business in the region. Reno's economy is more diverse than Las Vegas, but gaming is still our life blood, so to speak.

I hate to be negative, but I think we're at least a couple years away from seeing a turnaround. Things haven't yet bottomed-out IMO. It's funny though. Everywhere I look they are building. Reno Toyota comes to mind. They're currently building one of the biggest auto dealerships on the West Coast-3 stories tall and 1.5 times the size of a Super Walmart!

That is how it works. Build when it is down.

Thanks everybody for your input. We may decide after all to stick with Arizona. But we'll keep Reno and Lake Tahoe in mind for a nice vacation trip!

well i lived down in Damonte with my sister for 2 years
i graduated from Damonte HS as a Junior
i would say it was the best school i had even gone to
[i also went to Hug HS Wooster HS]
i thought all the teachers where respectful
the Students as well
even though there is a small group
[which I'm guessing are ur "Low Life" kids]
they didn't cause much trouble
i think that as long as you have confidence in the decisions
your kids will make in hs[same with any hs] they will have a very
good high school life at Damonte

the school also has a great JROTC program and very good AP courses
but i warn you the office assistants seem to have a Worse attitude problem then the 15 year old students.....
but really you will see them maybe once i year
i think you can get threw it.

as for the actual neighborhood
well i moved away and would have to say
i miss it on a great level as soon as i
save enough money for a down payment[i'm 17 btw]
i will buy a house in the double diamond area
i prefer it over Damonte.

well good luck with your new life style where ever you choose to live.

I lived in Damonte Ranch for 1 year. I did not like any of the neighbors on my street. I moved to their from South Meadows (a neighboring suburb). For us there was a distinct difference between neighbors. South Meadows houses are a mark below Damonte on the middle-class income ladder. My neighbors in Damonte Ranch were noticeably less friendly. Something I would expect from a more upper class neighborhood. Though Damonte Ranch had very nice walking trails around some federally protected marshes. The problem with that though is that there was an outbreak of West Nile in those marshes. I know the government took some steps at stopping that but I never heard the results.

Anyhow, I was very happy to have been crushed by the economic slump because I was able to ditch my upside-down house and finally be rid of my snobby neighbors. I moved back into my house in South Meadows and everyone on the street greeted us to tell us they were so happy to see that we moved back. It was a warm feeling that I never got in Damonte.

South Meadows does not look as pretty as Damonte Ranch in terms of aesthetics and landscaping but I would not move back.
