Is this the first step in fundamentalist control of the US?

:: ChristianExodus.org :: Come Out of Her, My People

ChristianExodus.org is moving Christian constitutionalists to specific cities and counties in South Carolina through a series of emigrations. Our board of directors considers the values of this state to be very similar to the values held by our membership. Additionally, South Carolina possesses a rich history of standing up for her rights.

Intermediate goals:
  1. Overwhelmingly impact the statewide elections of 2014.
  2. Complete multiple phases by end of 2015.
  3. Institute constitutional reforms returning proper autonomy to the State by 2018 regardless of illegal edicts from Washington, D.C.

Sounds like the Catholic Church of the inquisition period. I see them going for issues dealing with States Rights. These questions were the main focus of contention which brought about the War Between the States, and the resulting conclusion of that war ended many perceived States Rights.
This fringe groups attempts to press their issues will run head on into the Supreme Court. With luck the Court will remain a "middle of the road makeup" and we will keep a separation of Church and State as one of our basic freedoms.

I certainly hope this group does not enjoy tax exempt status as a religious organization as their stated goals are purely political.

If they do get any traction, I guess SC would be a place I would want to stay far away from - like the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Yep.. this pretty much sums of up their success..

"A 2006 goal to relocate 12,000 individuals to South Carolina was not met. To date the group claims that only about 15 families have relocated to South Carolina. Founder Cory Burnell still resides in California despite his own earlier efforts to relocate.[5]"

It's definitely an attempt. But so far the attempt has not been anywhere near successful so I think they are pretty far away from making the first actual step towards fundy control.

It doesn't scare me much. Much freakier religious groups have made it a lot further in their disregard for the whole US system. And I already guessed that many crazy fundies are separatists to boot.
