There should be another option in the poll such as "I am not an atheist and don't care to have anything to do with them, give them their own sub forum".

I find it interesting that there's a christian sub-forum yet numerous specifically christian threads in the regular R&P forum.
I don't see how that same phenomenon won't occur if a new sub-forum is created. It would be nice if there were just one thread For Atheists Only similar to the Gay thread.
My only real concern is the evangelism that goes on in the atheist threads. I'd be happy if there were just some respect of our point of view in the regular forum.
I guess I'm on the fence.
I see the point as well. But given that atheists/non-believers have only the lack of a belief in god in common, there should be much to discuss in a more philosophical sense. As it stands now, the evangelicals regularly come on every thread and start their atheist bashing and then the same conversation going around and around. Any original topic discourse gets lost in the same old fundie-atheist argument.
I would hope it could be an evangelical-free zone but welcome various god-believers as well who want to discuss topics without the never-ending crap about how we are going to burn in hell and have only to accept their particular brand of god-belief. There are lots of god-believers of various beliefs who have much more to say than Bible quotations or their particular brand of repent, the end is near.
I would think the whole never ending set of belief arguments could and will still go on in the main forum. Some have admitted that the reason they joined CD was to spread their version of the Word (i.e., how they are right and every one else is wrong).

I find it ironic that the vast majority of threads started from an atheist viewpoint put a challenge to the Christian/Biblical viewpoint, yet when Christians attempt to take up the challenge or answer, their input is decried... and they are accused of entering the thread and evangelizing.
What other kind of "atheist threads" are you talking about?
I do agree tho that philosophical discussions are sometimes taken off-topic... but often it is as a result of a someone from the Christian viewpoint answering a sarcastic or anti-Christian/biblical comment.
Don't mean to take this thread off-topic.. just a comment to let you know there are two sides to the issue.
I would have no problem with a separate subform being created...
Another question. Who will moderate the forum?
I know that on the R&P forum is a person who claims to have heard demonic voices and even seen demons. That person was once a moderator!

A case in point. Yet I have seen you to have some interesting thoughts to contribute that are not taking umbrage at a differing viewpoint or evangelizing.
Not believing in god or citing actual history is a challenge to a believer's viewpoint but is not in itself a bad thing. To respond only with scripture and protestations of faith derails the conversation to the same old thing. If you respond with insight based on something besides your particular faith, then real conversations happen and there can be some really interesting ideas exchanged.

Good points.. we all need to work on our respect towards the purpose or points of the respective threads, and keep in mind that our attitudes can go a long way in maintaining a productive discussion. I think we've all experienced where the points made in the OP seemingly were largely ignored and rather small unrelated comments were jumped on and picked apart. For example, if an atheist wants to talk about the many "gods" of various religions and how they affect their respective followers, and a Christian pops in and says "there is only one God, it says so in the Bible", this very likely would contribute to yet another thread derailment.
(and now I just went off topic... )
So in that case, an "atheist/agnostic" forum might be helpful..(because it would create more specialized mod rules).. altho I'm along with Troop in wondering what would be discussed. (But I can remember some of these same questions when the proposed "Christianity" forum was being discussed. After all the bugs were worked out, it seems to work OK.)

Reason: to remain on topic ;)

How sweet.
Anyway, I think it's a great idea. I would enjoy reading different discussions of different philosophies--existentialism comes to mind. It stands to reason that just because people are atheists doesn't mean they share the same views of the world. But I wonder if it shouldn't be called something like "non-religious" instead? It just seems to me like it should be broader.
Excuse me did I mention my name on the forum, what makes you think my name is Wayne?
By the way that was my point, if you atheists had your own sub forum I would stay away.
scuse me Moderator cut: Per member request....if you would stay away why did you jump headlong into the first thread that mentions atheists???????
