Haven't posted in awhile but when a high school friend from Connecticut shared with me that Westboro Baptist was going to picket the funerals of the 20 kids killed last week I was appalled, disgusted and simply irate. My friend directed me to the White House website where a petition was created to legally consider Westboro Baptist as a hate group. Check out the link and sign it if you agree https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/pet...group/DYf3pH2d
The Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) is an American, Independent Baptist church known for its extreme ideologies, especially those against homosexuality. The church is widely described as a hate group and is monitored as such by the Anti-Defamation League and Southern Poverty Law Center. It is headed by Fred Phelps and consists primarily of members of his large family; in 2011, the church stated that it had about 40 members.
The WBC is not affiliated with the two largest Baptist denominations, the Baptist World Alliance or the Southern Baptist Convention, both of which have denounced the WBC over the years.
Such action scares me. I'm not sure that most ordinary people see a difference between the westboro baptist inbreeds and the Southern Baptists. If we start classifying a "Baptist" church (no matter how non-Baptist they are) as a hate group....it's not a small jump to call any Christian church a hate group.
I'm not sure what logic, twisted as it might be, could be employed to picket those funerals. Anyway, it is not impossible for a charismatic wacko to convince other people to follow his lead. I present Jonestown as an example, but there are many others, perhaps even Nazi Germany.
It is unfortunate that this group adopted "Baptist" into their organization's name.

I agree and that was my initial hesitation in signing the document, however I did sign. Hopefully most intelligent people see the difference from mainstream Christianity and the Westboro people. Personally I prefer to call myself a "believer" rather than a Christian. The word Christian has lost so much truth. So many people like Westboro call themselves Christians when it's evident they're not. If you're hesitant to sign I'd suggest definitely praying about it.
There's not much difference in Westboro and many other theists' actions, like 9/11 and the Salem witch trials. Though I believe their actions are reprehensible, I support their freedom of speech.
You seem to have a low and inaccurate opinion of Christian churches. Can you give any examples? Or are you just spouting atheistic drivel?
Here you go:
Focus on the Family founder James Dobson said Monday that the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary resulted from America turning its back on God, joining other conservative Christian leaders in assigning blame for Friday's Connecticut shootings. Speaking to listeners of his "Dr. James Dobson's Family Talk" program, Dobson said God "has allowed judgment to fall upon us." SCROLL DOWN FOR DOBSON'S FULL PODCAST
The Christian who has continuously drawn the ire of groups such as the Southern Poverty Law Center and GLAAD for his anti-gay rhetoric and vitriolic tirades on behalf of the American Family Association, said on his radio show that God did not protect the victims of the Connecticut shooting because prayer has been prohibited from the public school system

James Dobson? How is that most churches? I guess I'm more familiar with mainline churches like another poster mentioned...I can count on one hand the Christians I know personally who follow anything Dobson says. He and others like him are getting lots of grief for these statements.

Simply quoting Dobson is indeed not evidence of "most churches", however, he is considered in the mainstream of Christianity, and indicative of how many Christians believe the "wrath of God" is being felt on earth, including hurricanes, tsunamis, famine, and war. Westboro only takes such views to the extreme.
