It seems more and more Evangelicals are leaving room for the idea that the Earth isn't only six to ten thousand years old after all...even many who affirm this believe are not totally dogmatic about it, acknowledging the possibility. Do you think Young-Earth Creationists are on the decline, even within the most literal Christians?

Yes unfortunately, it appears to be on the decline. But that doesn't mean that the truth is based on popularity or on science. The fact is science is limited while God is unlimited.
IMO, it's not up to the Christian to prove anything about God because there is no way of proving that something (or God) exists outside the rule of physics..
Evolution can''t prove itself otherwise there would be no need to look beyond this planet.
As what we know from science changes, the word of God remains the same. The truth about where we came from and how we got here remains steadfast. I will remain with it.
Except the word translated Day is better translated "era". Also Gen 1:1 is more properly translated "In the beginning of God's creation of heaven and earth, the Earth with without form and void", since everywhere else in the Bible that word is translated "In the beginning of" (so and so's reign).
Nearly 63% of American Christians are of evolution-accepting denomination.(Catholics represent 71% of the evolution-acceptors). And if you break down opposition to evolution by faith, you find that only 33% of Catholics (as opposed to 32% of the American public) see life as having evolved over time due to natural processes. Another poll shows that 58% of Catholics agree that evolution is the best explanation for the origin of human life on earth.
Also Gallup poll shows that since 1982 the percentage of creationists has decreased while the percentage of believers in non-theistic evolution has doubled.
So yes creationism is slowly declining thankfully.
If God can make Adam a full grown man, meaning if you saw him right after he was made, you would age him at around what, 30?
Then God can create the earth about 6000 years ago, but make it as old as He wanted it to be.
I have no problem with the earth being created 6000 years ago, but science saying it is older.
This is my suggestion for the Evangelicals.
Believe the Big Bang and evolution and simply state it was under the supervision of God.
All you need to do is go back to the moment before the Big Bang. Cosmologists have no idea about what was there before the Big Bang so it would be easy to invoke a creator just before the BB. This is precisely what Aquinas did in the 13th century and he was a smart man.
As for evolution:
Please accept all living organisms are linked. We have a common ancestor and that is the primordial chemical soup that provided the first organic life form. As of today the biologists have not been able to fully describe or create the conditions that lead to the primordial chemical soup. At that point it would be OK to invoke a creator.
Otherwise, you guys will appear non-intelligent to those in the scientific community.
And lastly:
The words in the Bible are allegoric. We are talking about a poem. IN poetry anything is possible.
With everything, there is more than one perspective. Science means Knowledge. Science isn't wrong. Scientists conclusions are wrong all the time. The majority of Scientists thought a big ball dropped faster than a smaller one until Galileo proved them wrong. Just because the majority thinks something, it doesn't mean it's correct.
It's said the only barrier to truth is presuming we already have it.
