Nothing makes someone do these horrible things except what ever is wrong with them in the first place. The problem is that these unstable people are attracted to fanatical beliefs, religious or otherwise.

Islam has an uncanny way of pushing people to doing this. If you study the OT and the Koran you will find that the God of the OT really hates false prophets, people who worship openly evil men, idolitry..etc..God has gone to ruthless extremes to rid of evils EXACLY like Islam. The NT has Jesus and the Rider in Rev19 as what influence God wants his people to take to fight against nations such as Islam, but that doesn't mean everyone is going to take them to influence. Someone could look at the OT and read of how God has had his people attack and kill false prophets, and those that has terrorized Jews in the distant past, and take that to influence. Islam puts itself in a real bad position with God and God's people. I'm surprised Jews haven't gone after Islam more aggressively, given what the OT says about how God feels about those nations that lie about God, steer people away from God, murder, oppress, and terrorize his people. Why doesn't the Jews take Jonah to influence and preach the truth about Islam? The Jews don't seem to mind that Muhammad proclaims to know better what the OT says and rewrites things as he sees fit. The Jews haven't been taking the OT to influence at all, it seems.

It seems they're coping pretty well - the reaction so far has been along the lines of "He thought he could change our nation, but we refuse to let him assume that power over us", which is exactly how I'd expect Norway to react.

Will they only sentence this guy to 21 years [the maximum sentence a criminal can receive in the country]? In my opinion this monster does not deserve to continue breathing.
He's never getting out. The Norwegian system have what is known as "forvaring" - best translated as detention or custody - in which particularly dangerous criminals are put away for a given sentence (which will almost certainly be 21 years in this case), after which there will be a court hearing where the criminal has to prove that his personality has changed so markedly, he's no longer a danger. There is one try every 5 years after that, and it's not a formality.

Sadly all he has to do is profess with a great deal of bible babble that he has found god.

Ehm - this is Norway we're talking about. Palying the "Reformed Christian" card doesn't work too well, if at all, there.

OSLO (Reuters) - Norwegians believe penalties for serious crimes in their country should be tightened in the wake of a shooting and bomb attack that killed 77 people in July, an opinion poll showed Monday.

In a survey of 1,283 people conducted six days after the July 22 attack, 65.5 percent said the penalties were "too low" and only 23.8 percent believed they were suitable, newspaper Verdens Gang reported.
