Just a point of information that I wanted to share with you, because it is fairly new: There are several states, including New York, where anyone who is a victim of domestic violence, and seeks an Order of Protection, can include, not only their children, but also their pets for protection. The perpetrator will be charged with additional criminal charges, in the event a pet is harmed or mistreated.

In good percentage of the cases the women don't make it, restraining order or not, but I'm very impressed the pets will be protected! Makes my day.

I have a funny feeling that someone who is beating the crap out of his wife/ SO will not be deterred because he might get an additional charge if he kicks Fido on the sly

This is great. I have a beautiful Cat and ironically my ex abuser loved her and treated her well. She loved him too. That is not always true for most abusers. I know if he had hurt my Cat I would have left him the first and last time. Pets are helpless. Thanks for the post.

You are right, pets are helpless. But, why bother passing a law about domestic violence that states an abuser will get MORE time if he hurts the family pet??? PLEASE! Laws are meant to be a deterrent and if someone is that enraged it is highly doubtful they will stop when they see the pet and say "Whew, I might get another 6 months added onto my my 15 years if I kick her too!"

Yep, no paper or a sweet little cat, dog, hamster, ferret or what ever the hell you have will stop someone who wants to hurt you. Glad our tax payer dollars are hard at work...
