I need some suggestions for some upscale (but not so pricey that it will break the bank) restaurants in Durham. I will be hosting a group of about 10 - would prefer nonchain. Thanks!

For a larger group, I think Cafe Parizade is a nice choice.

Parizade Restaurant Durham, NC (http://www.ghgrestaurants.com/parizade/parizademaster.html - broken link)

If you want quality Italian food - Piazza Italia in Brightleaf Square is wonderful, everything homemade, and can easily accommodate large parties: Piazza Italia

Metro 8 is a favorite of mine on 9th St. Excellent food, especially steaks. It's not cheap, but I think it's very reasonably priced for the quality of the food you get. There is an outdoor section in the back that would be perfect this time of year for a big group.

Maggiano's is a chain (but really good nonetheless).

i second Metro 8 and Nana's. check out www.yelp.com for some good reviews of local restaurants. we use it all the time to find new places to eat and most of the time we find the reviews spot-on.

I love the Piedmont. It's in downtown, really tasty, and has the best drink I've ever had -- I think its called the Rose Marie. The food there is really tasty. The menu isn't huge but I've never been disappointed!
