I'd like to take a trip up to raleigh when my DH gets back from deployment and I'm looking for some restaurant suggestions. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but I have yet to find a decent restaurant in the fayetteville area so I'm hoping to have better luck in raleigh. Or even something between fayetteville and raleigh. I don't want any chain restaurants, I'd prefer family owned/mom and pop type restaurants. Preferrably italian food or good pizza.

Any suggestions?

Are you wanting to do more upscale (Caffe Luna, Bella Mia) or more of a grab some beers and watch the game sort of place (Ruckus, Lilly's Pizza), or something in between (La Volta, Bella Monica, Daniel's, Gravy)?

yep, knowing what you are interested in for vibe would be helpful.

some of my favorite pizza/pasta places are piccola italia at cameron village & moonlight pizza in downtown. gravy was okay for italian, but i'm sort of ambivalent to it, personally.

lilly's at five points has delicious pizza but is often really crowded & when the weather is cooler, it's downright loud & crowded to me, so we tend to go when the weather is nice enough to get outdoor seating.

You mentioned Raleigh, Fayetteville and Italian. If you are coming from Fayetteville there is a excellent Italian restaurant at the intersection of Hwy 42 and Hwy 50 south of Raleigh. Name is LaPiazza. Greg Cox, News & Observer restaurant critic gave them a great review. Exit I-40 on exit 312 and head west. About 4-5 miles west of I-40. http://www.lapiazza-nc.com/
If you want to go to Raleigh a great italian restaurant is Casa Carbone on Glenwood Avenue north of Crabtree Valley Mall. Family owned and operated in Raleigh for a long time. http://www.casacarbone.com/

We really like Assaggio's in Raleigh, Anna's in Apex, and Ruckus in Cary. All of them have GREAT garlic knots.

Actually any. Upscale would be good for a night out with DH, but we all love a cheap pizza or just a good pasta dish and can't find much around the fayetteville area.

Thanks for the suggestions. I can't wait for DH to come home so we can try some of them out.

one other place i forgot to mention for a relaxed, but nicer atmosphere for italian is caffé luna. fresh & delicious with charming wood floor atmosphere. this is one of my favorites to go to before hitting memorial auditorium for a show, especially because they used to have the shuttle bus that would pick you up there & drop you off at memorial auditorium. the R-line may have replaced that, though.
