My oldest daughter has celiac and is on a gluten free diet. Shaw's in MA (owned by Albertson's) has quite a good selection of GF waffles, cookies, pizza etc. The rest of her food we get at Whole Foods once a month.
Tell me about the selection of GF foods in the supermarkets, restaurants (chains like Outback Steakhouse and non-chains) in Clayton and the rest of the Triangle.
I already Googled info a support group in Raleigh.
I haven't been on the hunt for GF specifically, but have seen some GF products at Lowe's foods particularly cereal and pasta. My daughter was gluten sensitive for awhile so these things still catch my eye. Of course Whole Foods here has a pretty good selection and I've seen the things we normally used to buy including waffles, pasta, cereal, crackers and cookies.
I would recommend joining NCFACES (a yahoo users group). Stands for NC Food Allergic Children Excelling Safely. I usually only read the posts related to peanut allergies. But I think I've seen posts about gluten free foods.
I have seen some stuff at the grocery stores but not a whole lot. I think you might have better luck at Whole Foods or Fresh Market. I know Maggianos Italian Resturant has an entire Gluten Free menu. There is one at Southpoint Mall.
Kroger's in Garner (on 70E) has some gluten free products (frozen waffles comes to mind) but also a few other things like cereals, cereal bars, etc.
Lowes in Clayton...you CAN find some gluten free things but there really isn't much; rice pasta, cereal bars in a very small allergy section, and some cereal. I think I may have seen waffles there too.
Thanks for the info! I moved to Cary from MA. I am close to Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. So we've had an easy time getting my daughter's food. We've also been able to find some things in Harris Teeter also. What a relief!
For those of you in Raleigh you may be interested in this. This past spring a place opened up in downtown that prepares meals for pick-up and delivery in a peanut, shellfish, and gluten free kitchen. It is called Rosie's Plate. You can read more about their services here:
Lily's Pizza on Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh is trying out GLUTEN-FREE PIZZA! (As I write this, it's mid-October, 2008). They will keep making it as long as they sell it.
I went today and had a pizza with pepperoni and artichoke hearts. DELICIOUS. I bought three more to freeze.
Please support Lily's pizza!
