My retired mother recently bought a small home in Wake Forest (Heritage area) and I am looking forward to spending a few weeks with her over the holidays.
I swim 4 - 6 miles per week, and would like to find an indoor lap pool that will permit me to keep up my swimming over the holidays. I am not looking for an olympic facility or anything fancy, just a reasonably clean pool where I can get in my laps during the daytime. Is there a health club or an aquatic club nearby that could accomodate a short-term member?
The closest indoor pool to your mom may be the YMCA, but I'm not sure if they have a short-term membership. You can ask YMCA (closest branch to you is probably Kerr).
The Millbrook Exchange (http://www.raleighnc.gov/portal/server.pt/gateway/PTARGS_0_2_306_209_0_43/http%3B/pt03/DIG_Web_Content/category/Leisure/Parks_and_Facilities/Swimming_Pools/Millbrook_Exchange_Pool/Cat-Index.html - broken link) and Optimist (http://raleigh-nc.org/portal/server.pt/gateway/PTARGS_0_2_306_209_0_43/http%3B/pt03/DIG_Web_Content/category/Leisure/Parks_and_Facilities/Swimming_Pools/Optimist_Pool/Cat-Index.html - broken link) pools in North Raleigh are year-round facilities covered by fabric tension bubbles. Not sure what there is closer to WF that would be open to the public for drop-in.
Granite Falls (in roleville, but maybe 5 miles from heritage) has a brand new indoor pool and work out facilities and the fees are similar to the Y.
I would also recommend the Rex wellness center (which is off of forest pines drive near wakefield). The pool at the wellness center is wonderful, saline based pool (so no eye watering chemicals like the Y), and the wellness center children are not allowed, thus the pool is not as crowded (and when they have lessons, they are done in the therapeutic pool, not the lap pool.
I would visit all three and decide, but if it were me, and i really wanted a place to swim as much as you do, I would pick Rex.
