I've been to various farmer's markets and street festivals with booths selling food, clothing, jewelry, etc., and obviously they're free. If one were to conduct a closed, paid event ($10 entrance fee) in Raleigh that's distinctly Raleigh (or the Triangle), what extras should be present to make it worth it, in your opinion?

No rides (don't want to duplicate the NC fair), but all other suggestions would be appreciated

I'm not sure what you are really looking for, but maybe a few tickets to be used in whatever fair type event you have in mind. You could sell additional tickets inside for games or food or whatever you have at your fair.

how about stage for local musicians and stage for local dance or martial arts performances?

What I would not want is to pay money to enter an event so I could shop for whatever they are selling. I hate paying an admission price for the privilege of buying something (or determining whether I want to buy something).

Is the money going to a cause? With so many free festival events this time of year, I am not sure I would pay to go to one, unless it had a big name music or theater act, etc. Next weekend is Raleigh Wide Open and it is totally free.

Why I'd pay $10 to sit in an outdoor restaurant-like setting with other people AND their dogs and watch the fireworks. The fireworks, of course, would come from folks who can't abide dogs at outdoor tables.

heh.

I either would not come, because I'd rather be able to spend the money on whatever is going on at the event, than spending it on admission to the event or.... I would expect lots of free food!
