I live in WI and we will be visiting some of these places on our trip. I would just like to if they are veiwed as being in a safe area. I enjoy visiting downtown Milwaukee when I can so I am not adverse to a urban area, but there are definatly places in Milwaukee I would not vist.

Basicall just wondering if these places are cleanish and safe?

I will be updating this as more places come to mind.

Raleigh Times Bar (14 East Hargett Street, Raleigh

Eno River State Park (6101 Cole Mill Road, Durham

The Pit (328 West Davie Street, Raleigh

Cat’s Cradle (300 East Main Street, Carrboro

Mama Dip’s (408 West Rosemary Street; 919-942-5837; www.mamadips.com

I am sure I will have more.

Thanks in advance to anyone who answers this.

Yes, the Eno is very nice. Although it is not an urban area, but you can get into town quickly from there.

The areas listed are kind of all over the place. I imagine you will be looking at surrounding places while visiting these locations right? For instance I wouldn't drive to Durham just for the Eno if you are not familiar with it. I would check out downtown and Duke too.

Also, all the places you have listed are generally safe. The areas that are unsafe do not have places anyone would visit or frequent anyways. Maybe I am not getting this post?

I'm always amused by these requests about "safe areas" here. It really says a lot about where people are coming from, and what it's like. I'm not suggesting it's Nirvana here - we have crime too, and there are some areas that are worse than others, but most people I know here don't tend to think or talk in terms of "safe areas" vs. "not safe areas." The places that have restaurants and clubs and the like are not in the pockets of higher crime.

Yeah, they're all fine. As the above person says, what "unsafe areas" we have here are mostly blighted residential areas in neglected parts of town; there wouldn't be anything you'd read about that would make you want to go near there.

My thoughts exactly.

Especially with the constant and most recent thread about "unsafe" Durham. All 218,000 of us fear for our lives every day!! Move here at your own risk!

When you visit these places, you'll chuckle about having asked. (But, I understand. I didn't know what to expect before I first visited either.) There are some rough areas in Raleigh and Durham, but you will have no reason to go there, and compared to most cities, it's hard to take them too seriously. You'll quickly find that Raleigh and Durham aren't that big. For a comparison, think Madison, not Milwaukee.

I went to Cats Cradle last night, and although it was a bit of a dive, it was right by UNC.... it seemed like a very safe neighborhood

Thanks for the info.

I hope I am not coming off as disparaging to the area at all, as I do not mean that. It is just that in WI there are areas that most people do not go. Now Milwaukee, WI is not a unsafe city by any means but it’s crime rate is in the top 15 cities in the USA. There are defiantly places I would tell visitors not to frequent.

That is a pervasive feeling here also, that there are clearly defined areas of the city that are unsafe. It would be strange to not have to worry about that sort of thing. It would also be nice.

Thanks again!

Most of the area is light urban, pretty safe. I wouldn't go up to a gaggle of kids and tell them off, but I've been to - or at least in sight of - all the places you listed and there aren't any where I'd be unusually concerned about my physical safety. I'd lock my stuff in the trunk in your Raleigh locations, though, and I wouldn't make it obvious that's what I was doing.
