Best Places to Live 2009 - Top 100: City details: Apex, NC - from MONEY Magazine

Economy – not immune to the recession but hit later and still possible to find a job (Housing – left out housing which is so important -nice homes at very affordable prices), Education – UNC, Duke, NC State and more (and a pretty good primary public school system but forget private schools unless you have the big bucks), Culture – nice cultural mix that closely reflects the nation.

Climate – moderate unlike most of the top ten, Business - 15 minutes from Research Triangle Park and growing economy, Aesthetics - not Sutter Creek or Saratoga CA but cute with many nice places a short drive away, Recreation – 2 hours to good beaches, 2-4 hours from awesome mountains, 10 minutes from a nice lake, Crime – not like the very rural areas but not bad for a major population center (very safe but don’t spit on the sidewalk the Apex Police don’t have much to do), Airport – major airport only 20 minutes away (easy traveling throughout the country), Metropolitan Access – Raleigh 20 minutes, Chapel Hill 25 minutes, Durham 30 minutes with many restaurants, cultural events, museums, night life and much more (most services needed are within 10 minutes), Traffic – I-40 can be tough during commute times but if living in Apex you avoid that drive to all the city centers. That drive is only necessary to go between Raleigh and Chapel Hill or Durham.

What is strange to me about this is that the above can be said for almost every town or city in the Triangle. Makes me wonder why they singeled out Apex. Why not Holly Springs? Just sayin'

My guess (didn't look into the methodology) is that HS may be too small to be considered. Cary is too big (or was last year).

Here is the methodology. The most basic criteria is population between 8,500 and 50,000, but there are others.
