I am aware of the neighbouring southpoint mall, however; my question is do people go to northgate mall on a regular basis and overall, what are the good and bad sides to the mall. please help as my decission is based on this forum too.., thanks!

I'm sure people go there as it's still in business, but it's certainly not a Southpoint or Crabtree, that's for sure. The few times I've been to Northgate were out of necessity. I wouldn't shop there by choice.

Too many other malls that are better. I can't recall the last time I went to Northgate...maybe 6 or 7 years ago. In speaking with friends and co-workers, if someone says they 'are going to the mall' or 'went to the mall' that they ever mean Northgate.

I really enjoy Northgate Mall, and I would take it over the other malls any day. It doesn't have everything, but it has what I need, out of a local mall. It is quite packed on the weekends but it is going to be local business for sure, and not filled with tourists and the such as the other malls in the area might be.

I have to get off the highway at the mall from work on weekdays, and it is always quite a hectic drive because it is very busy with mall traffic (this is at about 4:30-5pm).

Good: there are activities for families, little rides and whatever, including a merry-go-round and events occasionally on the weekends. It has Sears and Macy's, and a TigerDirect which is a great computer store so in my opinion, as far as a mall goes it has more than many other "local malls" that I've gone to in smaller cities. It just doesn't have "higher class" shopping stores. I also like that there are more niche type (seemingly family owned) stores than others. Personally, I think the mall has a lot of potential for attracting crowds and they seem to be working on that.

The only reason we go to Northgate Mall is when one of our daughters has a Dairy Queen craving as that's the closest DQ to our house.

I grew up going to Northgate and even worked there for four years. I now go there maybe once or twice a year. It is so sad to see how much it has changed since Southpoint opened. Everyone goes to Southpoint for shopping now. There is very little reason for me to go to Northgate and many feel the same. It's sad, but true. I do hope it eventually turns into a great mall again. No, it doesn't need to have the same shops it once did, but it needs something.

What kind of business is it? That would help determine if it would do ok.

No Duke students go to Northgate. We all go to Southpoint.

Why Northgate? Is the lease cost attractive?

I would consider Northgate a local mall, used mostly by nearby folks, and not as a regional destination.
I do not go there, because I can access similar acceptable offerings in multiple destinations nearer to home.
No issue with the mall. It just doesn't interest me.

Southpoint will have higher traffic, being widely recognized as a regional/destination mall.
I may go there once or twice a year, if that.

Of course, lower traffic should translate into lower lease costs.
Anecdotally, I would consider sitting in the mall for a long time, in different locations, and assess the traffic, the apparent amount of traffic and how many are just passing time, vs. carrying purchases.

I live 7 miles from n-gate and work three miles away. I only to Guitar Center. I cannot remember the last time I was actually inside the mall...... wait, I went to the DMV about three months ago.

Consiter your business and visit the mall on different days/times... kinda like you would if you were planning to move your family there. I think a big part of your descion should be about the valitity of your business, not what a forum says.

I moved back to Durham in in 2005 and I have probably been 3 times. Each time was because someone else had a specific store they needed to go there. I really don't like Northgate at all. I really just don't feel comfortable. It's not a relaxing shopping experience.

I went one time and there was a fight in the parking garage.

Another time I was entering the mall thru the food court behind a group of teens. One they passed security they all put on their red bandana's.

I hate it's like that now, b/c I used to go often after the closed South Square.
