My wife, sons (1 and 4), and I are moving to Raleigh area in the next year. We going for a visit next month and will be checking out different areas around town. Looking for 3000 sq ft ($400 - 600k) home in North Raleigh or Wake Forest.

Thoughts on subdivisions, schools, settings, and anything else???

Thanks,

Chris

Both have lots of great options. Commute to work would be my main consideration in deciding between the two. Where will you be commuting to?

Knightdale. After living in heavy traffic areas (Chicago, Atlanta, and now Seattle), I am happy to have a commute of only 30 - 45 minutes. Less is better though.

Why not live in Knightdale then?

What are you looking for? There are plenty of subdivisons, WF has great schools, and so does Raleigh.

To be honest, Wake Forest and North Raleigh aren't that much different, other then Wake Forest has it's own small town vibe and things to do (and most of us head into Raleigh, (North or Downtown) often enough anyway.

Although it wasn't one of your options, Clayton would be an easy commute to Knightdale.

Going against traffic on I440, I40, I540, puts Knightdale within 20-30 minutes of a great selection of housing options in your price range.

I live in wake forest, and love it! We have been here for 4 years, moving from cary. I love the small town feel, but it has enough "stuff" that I don't often need to leave! Wake Forest is basically divided by US 1 (also known as capital blvd), and we live on the west side of town which gives my hubby easier access to get to RTP without having to use highways (like capital, 540, etc).

There are many great neighborhoods in your price point, some with more land (galloway, glenmoor to name a small few) or smaller lots (heritage, wakefield, twin creeks, again a small few). I think it all depends on what you want to find. In my neighborhood, all homes are on an acre, and are in your price range, but my neighborhood is small (40 homes) with no amenities. Lots of different homes/neighborhoods you could find in wake forest.

Leigh

May I ask where this is? I wasn't aware of anyplace (unless it's an extremely high-dollar area) within a reasonable driving dist w/land like that.

Anyway I think it depends on what this person wants - something more rural or more "urban" or something in between? Newer? Older? etc etc

With a 400K to 600K price range, you can afford a nice neighborhood in an established, centrally located neighborhood in North Raleigh which some people might find preferable to Wake Forest. On the other hand, some prefer to live further out in the suburbs. Would you please provide some more detail about the type of house and setting you are looking for?

We looked in WF and N. Raleigh and discovered Bedford at Fall River in N. Raleigh. Love everything about the neighborhood. There is plenty in your price range to see here, so I would absolutely put it on your list of communities to check out.

To Knightdale from here is about 15 miles, so that is within your range.

You will get more land for your money in WF, but we just fell in love with this neighborhood and decided to give up on the big lot (although we do have close to 1/2 acre here).

There are plenty of posts on this forum on Bedford, as well as other neighborhoods, so be sure to do some searches.

One thing about parts of WF is dealing with Capital (Rte 1) during commuting time is a royal pain in the you know what. If you are here during a week day, get onto Capital at 8am and drive south a few miles from WF and you'll get a good feel for the congestion.

If you want more info on my neighborhood, feel free to send me a PM.

Good luck.
