I'm relocating to Roxboro, NC this summer but will continue to commute to RTP for work. I enjoy the small town atmosphere but still close enough to major urban areas. Are there any good restaurants (chain, non-chain), shopping destinations and attractions in town? I've read some good things about this town and it seems to be ideal for me and my family. Are there any new restaurants, shopping centers, etc. planned?

My parents live just south of Roxboro and I spent part of my childhood there, but I don't spend much time there these days so I am not aware of everything going on. That being said, here are my recommendations:

Restaurants - the Homestead (casual) and Clarksville Station (a bit more formal) are decent steakhouses, both located south of town. Hog Heaven is a traditional BBQ joint that is quite good. There is a Japanese/Hibachi place on 501 south that my parents like, but I don't remember the name. Durham has very many good restaurants so don't worry if you can't find something in Roxboro.

Shopping - nothing exciting going on there. There is a super Walmart and a Lowes, but for anything beyond basics people go to Durham or Danville, Va.

Attractions - Palace Point is a combination movie theater, bowing alley and video arcade south of town on 501 south that draws people from all over. There are lakes Hyco and Mayo north of town that have some recreation, I think. If you like the outdoors there are fishing and hunting opportunities.

I've heard from a friend who lives near there that there is a relatively new independent grocery store which carries mainly local produce and prepared foods. I believe it is on the main drag in town (501). Sounds worth checking out!

Default Relocating to Roxboro looking for info on racial climate and food

We too are contemplating a move to Roxboro. We are a mixed couple in our 60's (African American, caucasion). We are looking forward to working a couple more years and retiring. Sounds like there isn't a lot of racial tension in this area. I want to relax during my retirement not worry about folks causing a fuss.

We really enjoy ethnic foods, Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, Mexican, Italian, Polish etc and good ole southern cooking. That would be one thing we would miss. Do the larger towns have a good variety of ethnic markets and restaurants?

Hoping to find some small acreage and raise some vegetables.

I would strongly suggest a weekend visit with nothing on the agenda but experiencing the town. Walk around some of the places suggested here. Visit public spots. Go out to eat. Get a real feel for the place as the primary rather than secondary focus.

Vesuvios Italian Restaurant - Home

I know the owner, really nice guy. Other members of his family own several Italian restaurants in Durham as well.
