I was in this same position in Sept, and I went to court on my date (with no lawyer). Prior to being called before the judge, one other person in a similar situation went up and the judge said she didn't normally allow prayer for judgments for speeding in a school zone but she would in his situation due to the circumstances (can't remember what they were). So I was worried, but she did give me the prayer for judgment when I explained that I mistakenly thought that the school zone hours were over. (Not a great excuse, but it was true!)
Oh, and another lady was there who I'm guessing was about 65, and when the judge asked her, "Have you had a ticket in the last three years?" (The judge asked everyone this, to determine if they had had a prayer for judgment in the past three years.) When she said that she'd never had a ticket, the judge not only gave her a prayer for judgment but also waived her court costs too. (Usually with prayer for judgment, you pay your court costs but don't have to pay the fine.) So I would recommend stressing that you've NEVER had a ticket, and that might help. Granted, you haven't been driving as long as this lady had, but it sounds like your record is pretty clean nonetheless!
