The N&O noted that the Red Hat amphitheater will go away when the Convention Center is expanded, although that won't be anytime soon (~2030).
My guess, based on talking to people at least somewhat in the know, is that there will be a replacement. There’s a will to make that happen, at least. Downtown will definitely feel the loss if it doesn’t. Restaurants, parking lots, hotels will all take a hit. Doubt anything they gain from this new venue makes up for that. Kane will keep as much as possible in his Downtown South district.
It’s actually going to be east of S Saunders, near the Red Roof Inn
That is one long haul from my neck of the woods in North Raleigh. I suppose if there is something exclusive that is a "must-see" then I might drive that far, but DPAC is soooo much closer.
Indeed. As Raleigh continues to accept voluntary annexation petitions from developers in the slice between Brier Creek and Leesville Road, the percentage of Raleigh citizens who actually are closer to downtown Durham than downtown Raleigh keeps rising. 540 is basically the dividing line.
Yeah, it kinda sucks trekking across the metro after a show. I really have to think about if I want to make the trip if something I want to see is in Durm or Carrboro. Either is 30 minutes or more. DTR is like 15, so I don’t really think about it if someone I want to see books a show there. Downtown South will be like 10 minutes for me, so it will sure be convenient. We’ll have to see what sort of acts they get and how much they gouge on everything.
My initial impression is they impact the Ritz more than DPAC

If they ever convert US-70 north of I-540 into a true divided highway, the difference in travel times will become much more pronounced. But as it stands, I think anyone west of Creedmoor Rd and within 5 minutes of I-540 likely has a shorter commute to DPAC than Downtown South.

I would say that the type of shows that would go to DPAC vs. the Downtown South venue probably don't overlap
