On the drive from Asheville, we noticed these white sacks or pods in the trees that looked like plastic bags. They got less dense as we headed east on the 40.

Can anyone tell me what they are and when they hatch so I can flee the state?

okay... that's gross... but not as gross as these HUGE caterpillars we had back in los angeles that looked like large green peeps (you know, the sugary marshmallow easter basket filler that few people dare consume)... with the consistency of marshmallow, too... my mom's dog dragged one in.

But wow... those tent things were EVERYWHERE. Gross.
