Moving down to Chapel Hill in one month and need to set up an account with a bank. Which is better? Or do you have another recommendation? Thanks.

I chose Suntrust. Both are pretty well represented, though. In the month or so that I've had the Suntrust account, I've only had great experience with customer service.

I've never used suntrust but have had wachovia for a small secondary account, and Bank of America at one time.

No problems with either. BOA and wachovia both have ATM's all over. BOA probably has more...and is nationwide, which is nice if you travel a lot.

Our primary accounts are through citibank, and although there are no branches here, they do not charge for non-citi ATM withdrawals, and we stick to the Credit Union (Cash Points) ATMS so no fee there, either...

Wachovia began in NC and then merged with First Union so there seems to be alot more Wachovia branches than any other bank.

SunTrust is sprouting new banks quite often.

You can join Coastal Federal Credit Union for a one time $10 charge IIRC. We have an account with Wachovia also among other places and love them. Credit Union is tough to beat though.

I'll probably open an account with Wachovia before I move, because they have them out west too, so it'll be easier to access my money both in LA and NC.

Wachovia was rated tops in customer service according to consumer writer Clark Howard.

I use a credit union but would select Wachovia if I wanted a commercial bank. RBC Centura has gone down a lot since RBC got involved with it.

I have Wachovia.

You might want to do a search of the boards, as I can remember at least two threads on Wachovia and other banks.

Wachovia, Wachovia, Wachovia!!! I have banked with them since 1985. While no bank is perfect, I have never been disappointed in them and have never had a bad experience from the perspective of a customer. When they merged with First Union, I was really worried that the customer service would suffer but it hasn't skipped a beat.
